The "Helmholtz-Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energies" (HI ERN) is as IEK-11 part of Forschungszentrum Jülich and works in close collaboration with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. The research in HI ERN is focused on the areas of innovative materials and processes for hydrogen technologies, photovoltaic energy and solar fuels, therefore covering novel approaches for the conversion and storage of CO2-neutral energy. The successful candidate will be part of the team Stability of Electrocatalysts led by Dr. Serhiy Cherevko of Electrocatalysis department of the HI ERN. Our research interests are primarily in the field of electrochemical stability of materials used in electrochemical energy conversion, i.e. fuel cells and water electrolysis, and photoelectrochemistry. We focus on understanding the complex interplays between materials properties and electrochemical environment and their influences on materials degradation, in both fundamental and applied research. Together with other teams in the Electrocatalysis unit, we benefit from utilization of internationally unique material and process characterization methods which are based on the sophisticated coupling of novel electrochemical techniques with online analytical tools. Thereby the aim is to significantly contribute to the development of electrochemical energy conversion as a future key player for electromobility and the energy policy in general.

We are looking to recruit as soon as possible a

Postdoc in Electrochemistry / Combinatorial Chemistry

Your Job:

  • Further development of a high-throughput platform for electrocatalyst synthesis and characterization
  • Combinatorial discovery of fuel cell and water electrolysis electrocatalyst
  • Further development of new coupled electrochemical / non-electrochemical techniques
  • Close cooperation with other teams in the Electrocatalysis unit as well as internal and external project partners
  • Presentation of project results at international conferences
  • Regular organization and participation in project meetings
  • Scientific and administrative project coordination
  • Support in the preparation of scientific project reports
  • Support in the supervision of PhD students

Your Profile:

  • Graduate of a university with excellent academic degree and subsequent doctorate in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or a relevant discipline
  • Previous experience in electrochemistry is desirable but not mandatory. We encourage applications from candidates with a strong experience in combinatorial methods (in particular in chemistry) and/or development of coupled electrochemical/non-electrochemical
  • Strong interest in pursuing research in a multidisciplinary project related to development of a high-throughput platform in electrocatalysis research, in particular for fuel cells
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to show initiative and work independently
  • Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team and ability to lead a team
  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English
