The "Helmholtz-Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energies" (HI ERN) is as IEK-11 a branch office of the „Forschungszentrum Jülich“. The institute collaborates closely with the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. The research of HI ERN is focused on innovative materials and processes for photovoltaic energy systems and hydrogen as a storage and carrier medium for a CO2-neutral energy supply. The successful candidate will be part of the group “High-Throughput Materials and Devices for PV” within the research unit “High-Throughput Methods for Photovoltaics” of HI ERN. We are looking to recruit a

Chemical or Physical Laboratory Technician / Microtechnologist

Your Job:

  • Preparation of solution-processable semiconductors for processing in automated high-throughput processes as well as selection of the necessary process steps
  • Preparation and characterization of solutions and optoelectronic layers
  • Production and characterization of printed solar cells with electrical and optical methods
  • Construction, operation and maintenance of automated laboratory equipment (spin coaters, evaporators, pipetting systems, doctor blades, platereaders, spectrometers, etc.)
  • Independent definition of work steps and organization of laboratory operations
  • Sample preparation and analysis of samples by means of laboratory analysis (spectrometer, IR camera, microscope, Raman microscopy, photoluminescence, etc.)
  • Support in data evaluation, preparation and communication
  • Support in ordering, materials management and occupational safety
  • Determination of work steps and organization of laboratory operations

Your Profile:

  • Successfully completed training as a chemical laboratory assistant, physics laboratory assistant, microtechnologist or comparable training in the laboratory sector
  • Enjoy the development and construction of new test setups and new technologies
  • Good technical and organizational skills as well as computer skills
  • Personal initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Good cooperation and communication skills as well as the ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international team
  • Good command of spoken and written English

Experience in one or more of the following categories is also desirable:

  • Production of thin functional layers from the solution
  • Previous knowledge in electrical and electro-optical characterization of components (IV curve, spectrometer, PL)
  • Organization of occupational safety
