The successful candidate will be part of the Electrochemical Energy Conversion Team led by Dr. Serhiy Cherevko as part of the Electrocatalysis research unit of HI ERN. Our aim is to significantly contribute to the development of electrochemical energy conversion as a future key player for electromobility and the energy policy in general. We are looking to recruit a

Postdoc – Electrochemistry of Platinum Single Crystals

Your Job:

  • Further development of the on-line electrochemical inductively couple plasma mass spectrometry techniques
  • Electrochemical measurements on Pt and other single crystals using classical electrochemical setups
  • Investigation of metal single crystals oxidation and dissolution using on-line ICP-MS
  • Participation in collaborative in situ high-energy surface X-ray diffraction experiments
  • Analysis and communication of the obtained experimental data
  • Close collaboration with partners within HI ERN, FAU and outside
  • Writing papers and presenting the results at conferences
  • Writing progress reports
  • Representing of the institute at internal and external project meetings
  • Active participation in the training, mentoring and supervision of students

This position is related to our activities within an interdisciplinary research project on electrochemical oxidation and dissolution of platinum single crystals. Platinum single crystals serve as a model system in understanding the degradation of applied platinum based fuel cell electrocatalysts. Our part in this multidisciplinary research project is to further develop the existing experimental tools for metal dissolution analysis (on-line ICP-MS), perform electrochemical and dissolution measurements on platinum single crystals, and provide new mechanistic insights in oxidation and dissolution of model and applied Pt electrodes. Your Profile:

  • Excellent university degree (master) in Chemistry, Physics, Surface Science or related disciplines and a completed PhD
  • Previous experience in surface science and electrochemistry of single crystals
  • Experience or strong interest in the development of novel experimental tools
  • Strong interest in pursuing research in a multidisciplinary project related to platinum degradation in fuel cells
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to show initiative and work independently
  • Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English
