Karsten Müller studied chemical engineering at the Technische Universität München and the University of Cape Town (South Africa). In 2009 he joined the Institute of Separation Science and Technology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg where he received his doctorate 2013 for a thesis on the thermodynamics of the chemical utilization of carbon dioxide. After a stay at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (USA) in 2017, he received his habilitation in 2018 for his works on chemical energy storage systems. Since February 2019 he is head of a team at the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy working on efficient hydrogen storage.
His research focus is located at the link between thermodynamics and reaction engineering. He is working on the development of new technologies for the storage of energy, both, thermal energy and hydrogen, for several years. Reaching high efficiencies of these processes is the main goal of this research. Further aspects addressed are prediction of substance and reaction properties, catalysis and reliability of new chemical energy technologies. The research comprises experimental works as well as modeling of energy processes.
