EAM Starting Grant 2020: HI ERN scientist receives award

The new team leader at HI ERN is recognized for his excellent research as a scientist.

Dr. Moritz Wolf has received the EAM Starting Grant 2020. The scientist, who is now team leader at the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN), is being honored for his research on catalysts for the efficient and sustainable storage of renewable energies in chemical energy carriers.

More precisely: He identifies and examines potentially synergies in the use of nitrides as support materials in heterogeneous catalysts. The field of application of his research is, among other things, the upgrading of the climate-damaging greenhouse gas CO2 for the climate-neutral production of synthetic fuels and basic chemicals in large-scale chemical industry. Another promising application of the innovative carrier materials is the so-called LOHC technology, in which hydrogen is bound to an organic carrier liquid with the help of a catalyst and is thus efficiently stored.

With its funding program, the Cluster of Excellence Engineering of Advanced Materials and Processes, in short: EAM, at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität supports highly talented scientists in the field of materials and process research.

Since October 2020, Dr. Moritz Wolf is leading the Efficient Hydrogen Release team, which belongs to Prof. Peter Wasserscheid's research department for Chemical Hydrogen Storage. The goal of his team is to develop technologies that enable energy storage with high efficiency. To achieve this, he and his colleagues conduct basic research, as well as applied technical research on advanced catalysts, devices and systems. This is mainly done in the context of the project Emissionsfreier und stark emissionsreduzierter Bahnverkehr auf nicht-elektrifizierten Strecken, which is funded by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.
