Team Interface Engineering for Water Electrolysis
Head: Dr. Retha Peach
Our focus is centered on the development of high performing membrane electrode assemblies for Hydrogen electrolyzers with high durability and low cost. These include PEM, bipolar membrane, and alkaline water electrolyzers. For each system the properties of catalyst layer, membrane, transport layer and their respective interfaces are evaluated. Discriminating associated voltage losses in electrochemical measurements allow for a better understanding and engineering of the membrane electrode assemblies.
This includes investigations of different membrane and electrode materials and components with the respective manufacturing processes at our disposal. Together with collaborating parties, it is our aim to incorporate novel catalyst and polymer materials into small scale, proof-of-concept electrolyzers, in order to lay the ground work for the production of CO2-free, Hydrogen at an industrial scale.
