Single atom catalyst gain tremendous momentum in the field of electrochemistry with prospects of high selectivity and tenability towards various reactions. While many reports support these advantages, the role of the ligating heteroatoms and the stability of the coordinated M ions is rarely addressed.
We set out to clarify the degradation mechanisms of a representative Pt SAC. By combining identical location electron microscopy and x-ray spectroscopy with on-line dissolution analysis of Pt as well as the ligating S, we draw a conclusive picture of a stable operational window in acidic electrolyte and the pathway of degradation.
