PolymerCHECK

PolymerCHECK is a cooperation between the companies SUNTEC Energiesysteme GmbH, Ingenieurbüro Mencke & Tegtmeyer GmbH, SKZ GmbH and HI ERN. The project is coordinated by ENERGIEregion Nürnberg e.V. as part of the ZIM Network MobiInspec. PolymerCHECK is funded by the BMWi as part of the ZIM funding and is scheduled to run until March 2023.

The main focus of the "PolymerCHECK" project is the development of a field-suitable measurement technique to characterize the material composition of backsheets in PV modules.

Backsheet films degraded by weathering are a common cause of damage when PV systems suddenly stop functioning properly after several years of operation. The malfunction typically manifests itself by detecting a ground fault caused by insufficient electrical insulation of the backsheet of some modules.

The project will therefore develop a mobile, field-ready measuring device - based on spectroscopy - to examine the backsheet films. In addition, a method for accelerated aging and improved detection of aging effects is to be developed in the project in order to test film structures with regard to their weathering resistance.

The figure below shows a cross-section of a PV-Backsheet. The individual polymer components are identified using RAMAN-imaging. From these images characterisic signatures for typical backsheets are extracted, and within PolymerCHECK a fiield suitable system is developed to identify these backsheets with NIR-measurements.
