COSIMA - Yield monitoring and forecasting

of solar parks through intelligent quality management

Cosima is a research project of funded by the german Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) through the PTJ with 2 Million € of funding for HI ERN for a period of 36 months. Since July 2018, HI ERN has been working with six partners from industry and research, the camera manufacturer IRCAM from Erlangen, the Nuremberg energy supplier N-ERGIE, the system provider Rauschert from Thuringia, the Nuremberg power electronics developer DHG Engineering and the Institute ELSYS of the Nuremberg Technical University as well as the associated partner Allianz Risk Consulting GmbH (Allianz Zentrum für Technik) from Munich, on the development of methods to guarantee the secure energy supply from solar parks. While in 2018 a total solar capacity 46 GWp (46,000,000,000 watts) was installed in Germany, several 100 GWp of solar output (more than 100,000,000,000 watts) will be required in Germany in the future in order to meet climate targets. To achieve this it is mandatory, that solar parks are operated at a high quality and security level. The partners in the COSIMA project make an important contribution to this.

State-of-the-art technology is used to detect faults in solar parks. Programmable and remote-controlled drones will be equipped with intelligent and innovative camera technology. Sensitive electroluminescence and infrared cameras will detect and visualize defects that are invisible to the eye. Intelligent testing and evaluation routines are essential for efficient quality control and analysis. For a 1 MWp open field system, approx. 4000 modules with the same appearance have to be recognized, classified and identified. An automated image evaluation is therefore indispensable. The heart of the measuring system will be the prediction of the medium-term plant quality on the basis of extensive scientific investigations, which will be researched by the working group "High throughput methods for characterisation and modelling of PV systems". Under the project management of HI ERN, the expert consortium intends to set up the first and so far only measuring system by June 2021, which measures PV systems autonomously and automatically detects and diagnoses fault patterns and predicts the expected system yield from this.
