Pero4PV - High throughput screening of lead-free Perovskites for photovoltaic applications

Pero4PV is a research project of funded by the the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) as part of the 8th Energy research framework program (FKZ: 03EE1092A). As part of the funding HI ERN receives almost 570.000 Euros over a period of 3 years.

Pero4PV is a cooperative project coordinated by the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nuremberg for renewable energies. For Pero4PV HI ERN is joining forces with Perovskite industry leader Oxford PV and the startup SCIPRIOS to take on the challenging task of screening large compositional spaces of perovskite materials for photovoltaic applications.

Perovskite semiconductors are a class of materials with the potential to fundamentally change photovoltaics. However, the perovskite compounds with the best efficiencies and stabilities to date contain the element lead. Lead-free alternatives to these materials are of high commercial interest. To find lead-free analogs, a large material and process parameter space must be searched. Material databases already contain simulation data for possible suitable material combinations. However, efficient experimental screening of these materials has not been possible so far. In Pero4PV, database-driven high-throughput research is used to experimentally identify lead-free perovskite compounds for use in photovoltaics and to qualify them for their suitability in products. For this purpose, a stage-gate process is being developed in Pero4PV to successively characterize materials from solution to film to device. In addition, a fully automated setup for solar cell manufacturing based on liquid-processed perovskites with real-time process control to influence the microstructure is being developed. The setup will be used for screening, as well as for cell fabrication, for the purpose of stability studies.
