AutoPeroSol - towards automatic data management and a common ontology for perovskite solar cell device data

Together with HZB, FZJ/HI-ERN and KIT, the HGF is an international leader in the research and development of perovskite and development of perovskite photovoltaics. At present, the centers produce about 50000 solar cells per year. Most of the data generated, especially metadata of the device production, is never published, and rarely meets FAIR data principles. This project addresses this challenge by a) creating a data ontology around the synthesis and characterization of perovskite solar cells, b procedures and software for easy capture and storage of device- and other manufacturing-related metadata and their linkage to associated raw data, c) automated methods for data handling and extraction of key parameters, d) and the Establishment of a centralized data storage solution, developed. The vision of the project is that with a few mouse clicks, all generated data and metadata a) captured and linked b) automatically analyzed and visualized c) uploaded to a centralized data repository d) compared with reference data sets to enable continuous analysis, process monitoring and feedback. An additional mouse click should be sufficient to upload the corresponding data, which then comply with FAIR data principles, into open data repositories, such as the Perovskite Database project. This project opens up a qualitatively new level in the management of material and device data within the HGF by increasing the value of data, freeing it from routine tasks, the acceleration of experimental feedback, and the possibility to use AI and ML to be used in research. The tools will be available to the entire perovskite research community with associated high international visibility.

AutoPeroSol is funded as part of the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) which promotes the qualitative enrichment of research data by means of metadata – and implements this approach across the whole organization. HMC develops and implements novel concepts and technologies for a sustainable handling of research data through high-quality metadata. Its main goal is to make the depth and breadth of research data produced by Helmholtz Centres findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) for whole science community.

Nine projects have been selected for funding in the first project call of the Helmholtz Incubator Platform Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) with a total of 3.45 million Euro – half of which is provided by the Helmholtz Initiative and Networking Fund. 12 Helmholtz Centres are involved representing all six research areas of the Helmholtz Association. Each project will run for 24 months.
