EMERGE - Emerging Printed Electronics Research Infrastructure
Emerging Printed Electronics Research Infrastructure (EMERGE) is a project within the H2020-INFRAIA-2018-2020 work programme which is part of the Integrating Activities for Starting Communities (INFRAIA-02-2018-2020) call aiming to establish a strong community addressing the challenges concerning all the value chain connected to the flexible large-area printed electronics and photonics (FLAPEP), going from materials formulation to design and architecture of processes, devices and systems.
EMERGE ensures efficient and optimum use of its infrastructure and is a driving force for a growing European community of researchers from academia and industry for joint developments targeting the “Green Deal for Europe”,i while triggers and facilitates the formation of European symbiotic clusters. EMERGE is rooted in FLAPEP field which includes among others, hybrid thin film transistors (TFTs), printed electronics & circuitry, (bio-)sensors, in-vitro diagnostic platforms, photovoltaics (PV), nanogenerators and energy storage media. We address FLAPEP because they have the potential to be environment-friendly and allow a circular economy for electronic/microelectronic devices – compared to nearly all state-of-the-art products, which are not or only partially recyclable. FLAPEP are highly relevant for the challenges of the future as is evident by their huge market’s potential: IDTechEx has predicted that the total market for FLAPEP, which represented in 2016 over 23 billion Euros, will grow and reach almost 62 billion Euros in ten years. The number of possibilities offered by FLAPEP technology is enormous and currently Europe has a leading position in the research and development of corresponding products. Nevertheless, a novel approach is required by exploiting eco-friendlier green materials that includes inorganic oxides at the nanoscale, biocompatible polymers, paper and hybrid sustainable materialsv to maintain Europe’s leadership in the future.
The EU can become the world's leading region in new sustainable industries by encouraging the adoption of FLAPEP green technologies in particular by SMEs, which have a strong impact on the European economy. For supporting the consolidation of this technological revolution, the establishment of new communities is a prerequisite, able to answer to this strong demand towards EU prosperity. SMEs can quickly adapt to the new technological challenges, without the need for major transformations, representing ideal seeds of new communities’ deployment. EMERGE, as a novel starting community, will be the enabler for development and realization of printable devices and systems based on eco-friendly materials. EMERGE will serve therefore the basic and applied
science challenges along the material-process-product chain to achieve most relevant sustainable research and technology targets for FLAPEP, which are needed to support the EU political priorities and to address relevant societal challenges. EMERGE will trigger the definition of guidelines for further exploitation of industrial symbiosis of green technologies by identifying best practices and maintaining an up-to-date inventory of projects and opportunities for cross-sectoral cooperation and networking. EMERGE will promote the resulting benefits and will assist in educating and establishing the grounds of cooperative European research, in an accelerated way towards the key European targets related to the Green Deal for the period of 2021 to 2030.
