Research Interest

The dehydrogenation of liquid organic H2 storage materials (LOHCs) is subject to thermodynamic limits. Reactive Distillation (RD) can enable dehydrogenation at lower temperatures by addressing limitations imposed by reaction equilibrium and slow kinetics.
A technical setup to investigate RD for the LOHC dehydrogenation is missing. Designing such a miniplant is the focus of this project. Challenges that must be overcome on the way are linking catalytic reaction engineering with thermodynamics, complex hydrodynamics and technical issues like constructing a rectangular plate reactor, vacuum sealing and continuous process operation.
The superordinate idea is that by reducing the reaction temperature of the endothermic dehydrogenation the offheat from a H2 consuming fuel cell can be utilized directly.
