Research Interest

By bonding green-generated hydrogen to LOHCs, elemental hydrogen is made transportable with multiple advantages over existing technologies. This allows to overcome large distances between energy production and consumption location via LOHC storage systems. For hydrogen release, the LOHC is dehydrogenated in an endothermic heterogen catalyzed reaction that requires a continuous heat source. Beneath the use of waste heat and the combustion of hydrogen, the exothermic partial oxidation of LOHCs is a promising concept for the reactions heat supply. Michael Gundermann’s research focuses on the development of a plant for continuous partial oxidation of LOHCs. The understanding of the reaction kinetics and the determination of the influencing reaction parameters play a crucial role in the context of reactor design and optimisation.
During a 1.5-year research project in his master's program, he dealt with the heat recovery of exhaust gas energy in shell and tube heat exchangers running in condensation mode. Beneath the improving of the experimental database in this field of research, he proposed a correlation for the prediction of the heat transfer coefficient in an exhaust gas heat exchanger in which parts of the gas humidity condense.
