Awarded: Hanna Kallweit and Marco Martini receive "Best Poster Award"

Braunschweig, September 19, 2024 - The two PhD students Hanna Kallweit and Marco Martini were able to convince the jury with their poster contributions. Both received the award at the "Electrochemistry 2024" conference in Braunschweig.

PhD student Hanna Kallweit was honoured with the Best Poster Award at the "Electrochemistry 2024" conference.

Hanna Kallweit presented in her poster "Electrochemical Valorization of Cyrene Towards Fine Chemical Building Blocks" the electrochemical Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of the biomass-derived platform chemical cyrene. She demonstrated the optimization of the process using a customized scanning flow cell (SFC) in combination with real-time direct mass spectrometry (SFC-RTMS). With the obtained voltmassograms, electrochemical information can directly be correlated with the compounds formed at the working electrode which allows a deeper understanding and straightforward tuning of the reaction. The jury honored the chemist with the "Best Poster Award".

Hanna Kallweit studied chemistry at the Technical University of Munich and joined the HI ERN in July 2023. She works under the supervision of Dr. Pavlo Nikolaienko in the field of organic electrosynthesis. She focuses on the research of sustainable electrochemical synthetic routes to replace fossil routes for the electrification of the chemical industry.

Another HI ERN poster also impressed the jury: Marco Martini received the "Best Poster Award" for his contribution entitled "Towards an Elevated Temperature and Pressure 3-Electrode Hydrodynamic Channel Flow Cell". The PhD student highlighted the technical concepts and achievements related to the construction of a new test rig. This will enable, when commissioned, the activity of new electrocatalysts to be evaluated at elevated temperatures and pressures, conditions that are often used in industry, but are currently rarely used for laboratory-scale testing.

Marco Martini completed his Master's degree in Industrial Chemistry at the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna (Italy) with distinction. He has been working at HI ERN since December 2022 in the "Electrocatalysis" group of Prof. Karl Mayrhofer. The focus of his research is the development of systems and experimental setups, ultimately focussed on finding technical solutions that lead to new methods and procedures in the research field of electrocatalysis. The benchmarking of these new concepts and troubleshooting are also an important part of his work and the main part of the presented poster.

The "Electrochemistry" conference is organized annually by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GdCh) e.V. (German Chemical Society). The GdCh represents around 30,000 members from science, industry and the liberal professions.
